AMD's Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APU lineup for mainstream laptops will see two distinct launches, one for global audiences and one for China.
AMD Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs Will Have Regional Differences in Naming Scheme
The new AMD Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" series APUs will reportedly release in two variants; Ryzen 7040H and 7040HS. Now both lineups have regional differences, as the 'H" variant is specific to China while the "HS" variants will be available globally. Many consumers have misinterpreted the release mainly due to the fact that the previous generations had both H and HS series globally available.
While there isn't any significant difference in both lineups, Videocardz reports an exception of "AMD EXPO" in the 7940H but this could be an error made in the spec sheet. AMD has also updated its website to clarify the regional difference in both lineups. To sum it up, the APUs will be available in the following regions:
- AMD Ryzen 7040HS "Phoenix" - NA / EMEA / LATAM / AJP
- AMD Ryzen 7040H - PROC (People's Republic of China)
While the majority of AMD Ryzen 7040HS "Phoenix" SKUs haven't been spotted in any impending laptop releases, only the AMD Ryzen 9 Pro 7940HS with AMD's Radeon RX 7600M GPU was spotted in a laptop limited to some retailers. AMD did say that the Ryzen 7040 CPUs were shipped by OEMs in Q1 2023. However, we have not seen the whole lineup utilized in upcoming laptop releases. The China-based retailers have listed several AMD Ryzen 9 7940H variants & there's no 7940HS model listed so far. Even the Mini PCs that are mainly aimed at global markets are utilizing the 7040HS APU design.
The AMD Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APU lineup is highly anticipated amongst consumers, mainly due to its efficient performance and the use of RDNA 3 graphics which offers performance on par with the entry-level discrete GPUs on laptops. We expect the products powered by the Ryzen "7040" APUs to hit the shelves in the upcoming days. Meanwhile, JD.com has listed down several Ryzen 9 7940H laptops which you can check out over here.
