AMD has just announced the world's first 3D V-Cache CPU for laptops, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, which will offer up to 128 MB of cache.
AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D Official, First 3D V-Cache CPU For Laptops With ASUS Clawing First Design
The AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D isn't just a rumor anymore and has been officially announced by the red team as its first 3D V-Cache chip. The chip features the same core configuration as the Ryzen 7045 "Dragon Range" CPUs with the Zen 4 core architecture coming in a chiplet package design & featuring a similar layout as the desktop-grade chips. This time, AMD has brought the stacked 3D cache treatment over to its laptop CPUs which will make for an impressive flagship offering.
So starting straight with the specifications, the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D comes with a 16-core and 32-thread configuration which is implemented in a dual CCD layout. Each CCD itself carries 32 MB of L3 cache for a total pool of 64 MB but one of these CCDs comes with a 3D V-cache stack of 64.0 MB which increases the total pool to 128 MB. The CPU features a base clock speed of 2.3 GHz that is 200 MHz lower than the Ryzen 9 7945HX but the boost frequency remains the same at 5.4 GHz.
Considering the minute difference in the way voltages and power are handled for the 3D V-Cache chip, a slight reduction in clock speeds was expected. Other specifications include a 55W+ TDP as this chip is ultimately an HX design and some form of tuning such as PBO and CO will be available for consumers to play around with. The standard HX chip features a TDP of 55-75W+.
You will also get the same AMD Radeon 610M GPU powered by the RDNA 2 graphics architecture. This small 2 Compute Unit chip is ample for lightweight workloads that don't require the dGPU & can help save some crucial battery time. Of course, for gaming, you will have to use the dGPU since the iGPU isn't strong enough for those.
In terms of performance, AMD will be issuing the same chipset driver under the (5.01.03.005) releases which optimizes game performance for the Ryzen 9 3D V-Cache CPUs that utilize a dual-CCD configuration. This is essential as it provides the CCD to automatically detect when a game is running and utilize the best CCD for the specific workload (which in this case would be the one with 3D V-Cache).
The numbers disclosed by AMD show that you can get some amazing performance boost over a non-3D V-Cache chip while retaining superior efficiency. At 40W, the CPU delivers a 23% gain over non-V-Cache parts. The three configurations were tested in Shadow of The Tomb Raider running at 1080p at high settings.
When it comes to gaming performance, the CPU offers up to a 53% gain and a 15% average performance improvement across a wide variety of gaming titles over the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX CPU which is impressive & will lead to some amazing performance on the mobility platforms. It can be seen that the biggest advantages come in titles such as Riftbreaker, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Cyberpunk 2077, F1 2021, and Dirt 5, all witnessing a 20%+ performance boost. Following is the full breakdown:
AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D vs Ryzen 9 7945HX Gaming Performance (1080p / High):
- Riftbreaker - +53%
- Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - +44%
- Cyberpunk 2077 - +44%
- F1 2021 - +38%
- Dirt 5 - +26%
- Middle Earth: Shadow of War - +16%
- Borderlands 3 - +10%
- Total War: Warhammer 3 - +7%
- Final Fantasy 14 - +7%
- DOTA 2 - +4%
- Strange Brigade - -3%
These high-end 3D V-Cache boosted Dragon Range CPUs will definitely give Intel Raptor Lake-HX and the upcoming 14th-gen refresh parts a run for their money, offering amazing gaming performance and efficient operation versus the very power-hungry chips from the blue team.
- AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D - 16 Core, 32 Thread, 5.4 GHz, 128 MB L3 Cache, 55-75W TDP
- AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX - 16 Core, 32 Thread, 5.4 GHz, 64 MB L3 Cache, 55-75W TDP
Talking about platforms, the ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 X3D will be amongst the first laptop to utilize the new AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D CPU. The laptop is said to launch on the 22nd of August this year and will host the best GPUs including up to GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 from NVIDIA. Pricing might be a bit on the high side but for a high-end desktop gaming replacement, this thing will have tons of power for enthusiasts. It will be interesting to see if the laptop remains an exclusive deal to ASUS since the red team also offered its Ryzen Z1 series APUs to ASUS first which powers their ROG Ally gaming handheld.
