Featuring 12 classes and 46 subclasses, it can be daunting to find which class and which party combination works best for you in Baldur's Gate 3. Each class comes with its own unique abilities, so any choice is generally fine, especially at Explorer and Balanced difficulty.
But if you're among those adventurers who are not satisfied by just surviving a combat encounter, you will want to pick among a few classes which provide you with all the tools to dominate the battlefield with ease.
Which Class Should You Pick for Your Custom Character in Baldur's Gate 3?
One of the most important things to keep in mind in Baldur's Gate 3 to have as fewer troubles as possible at all times is to put together a balanced party without having to spend additional resources to recruit Hirelings or change the class of the Origin characters, especially if you're a D&D newcomer and do not have a good idea of what each class is capable of doing. As such, with your custom character, you will want to fill in the gaps. As the Origin characters are a Cleric, Wizard, Rogue, Warlock, Fighter, and Barbarian, you should avoid picking any of these classes unless, again, you have a good knowledge of their subclasses to build them in such a way that they feel different.
This leaves the Bard, Paladin, Ranger, and Monk for the class you should pick for your character. Among them, the absolute best are the Bard and the Paladin. The Bard is not particularly good at direct combat, but its wealth of support abilities makes it one of the best classes in the game, such as Bardic Inspiration, which grants a bonus to any party member's rolls. In case you go for a Bard, the best races for it are the Wood or Drow Half-Elf or the Asmodeus Tiefling.
The Paladin may not offer the same level of support the Bard does, but it's still a well-rounded class capable of healing wounds, dealing a lot of damage with Divine Smite, and taking more than a few hits thanks to its heavy armor proficiency. In case you want to go for a Paladin, the best races are the Zariel Tiefling, Shield Dward, and Wood Half-Eld
The Ranger and the Monk are less solid choices overall. While it's a rather versatile class that can deal damage using melee, ranged, spells, and Familiars, the Ranger isn't as useful as the Bard or hard-hitting as the Paladin, so I suggest you pick this one only if you're already familiar with the D&D 5th edition ruleset and know how to fill the gaps the Ranger leaves open. The best race for a Ranger is the Wood Elf.
The Monk is definitely the worst choice for a custom character in Baldur's Gate 3. On paper, this class sounds really cool, with high mobility that lets them zip from one side to the other of the battlefield, but in reality, it is somewhat lacking, as its offensive capabilities aren't that great, and so isn't its survivability. Its stealth capabilities aren't anything to write home about either, as the Rogue is definitely superior in this regard. In case you decide to make a Monk work, you should create a Wood Elf Monk.
