SiliconMotion has just announced its upcoming SM2508 PCIe Gen5 SSD controller which offers up to 14 GB/s speeds at just 3.5W.
SiliconMotion Unveils Next-Gen SSD Controllers Including PCIe Gen5-Ready "SM2508" Boasting Up To 14 GB/s Speeds
The announcement was made during the FMS 2023 (Flash Memory Summit) event in Santa Clara, where the company hosted a range of new products from enterprise to consumer-tier solutions. Starting with the consumer-tier solutions first, we have SiliconMotion's upcoming SM2508 NVMe PCIe Gen5 SSD controller which will be the high-end solution tackling Phison's E26 solution. Based on the specifications, the SM2508 controller will offer up to 14 GB/s (Read/Write) speeds, up to 2.5 Million IOPS, and will support 3D TLC/QLC NAND.
One of the biggest talking points about SiliconMotion's new SM2508 controller is the fact that it operates at just 3.5W TDP which could lead to much more efficient PCIe Gen5 SSD designs. The current Phison Gen5 SSDs do run very hot and require rather high-end cooling solutions so that might change with these ultra-low power Gen5 SSDs. Another important thing is that the SM2508 controller will support up to 8-Channel DRAM running at 3600 MT/s speeds which is a nice boost over the 8-Channel 2400 MT/s DRAM on the Phison E26 controller.
At Computex, we saw a few SSD products from ADATA XPG utilizing this brand-new SM2508 Gen5 controller. The device shown was a high-end "Project NeonStorm) solution that was water-cooled and can be seen here. XPG told us that the water-cooling provided up to 20% lower temps but it's not necessary to have these storage devices cooled by such high-end cooling solutions and even passive designs will work great.
SiliconMotion states up to 8 TB capacities which will be great and we can see some normalization of prices for PCIe Gen5 SSDs which have so far been targeting the high-end marketplace. Besides the SM2508, Phison also unveiled its MonTitan PCIe Gen5 Enterprise SSD platform that utilizes the SM8366 PCIe Gen5 SSD controller. This controller is designed to support 16 NAND channels with up to 2400 MT/s TLC & QLC NAND while retaining the same 14 GB/s speeds (up to 3 Million IOPS). The features are listed below:
- The industry's first PCIe Gen5 ZNS SSD (Zoned Namespace SSD) built for QLC NAND achieves high-performance, high-capacity SSDs while reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) and improving sequential storage QoS.
- The NVMe Gen5 data center SSD adopts the PerformaShape technology of the MonTitan platform and uses four user-defined QoS settings to optimize performance, power consumption, and latency in a multi-tenant environment.
- OCP 2.0 NVMe Gen5 data center E1.S SSD performance demonstration, suitable for computing-intensive applications that require performance expansion and excellent QoS.
The company demoed the controller on servers that make use of traditional U.2 and EDSFF SSDs from ASUS and Pegatron.
Finally, SiliconMotion also unveiled the world's first "Automotive-Grade" PCIe Gen4 SSD controller, the SM2264XT-AT which comes with a quad-core ARM R8 CPU and includes PCIe 16 GB/s I/O speed with built-in SR-IOV Function. There's no information regarding the launch of the PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs for consumers yet but we can expect them later this year.
