Minisforum has unveiled its upcoming UM790 XTX Mini PC which features the fastest AMD Ryzen 7040 APU to date & support for dGPU.
Minisforum Puts A 70W AMD Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APU In Its Upcoming UM790 XTX Mini PC
The AMD Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs are a great solution for Mini PCs, Laptops, and handhelds. These APUs traditionally come in TDPs ranging from 7W and up to 54W but Minisforum has the APU fully unshackled within its upcoming UM790 XTX Mini PC. This new Mini PC is a powerful & enhanced version of the UM790 Pro which we have previously talked about over here.
In terms of design, the Minisforum UM790 XTX Mini PC features a similar metal shell casing but it comes with a thicker overall layout that is needed to ensure optimal cooling performance. UM790 XTX Mini PCs are equipped with bigger exhaust vents on the back and feature a handsome array of I/O which includes two USB4 ports, four USB 3.2 Gen2 ports, 1x HDMI, 1x DP, two 2.5 GbE ports & support for 65-100 PD (Power Delivery).
The biggest upgrade is definitely the APU itself. While the Minisforum UM790 Pro supports AMD's Ryzen 9 7940HS APUs with up to 65W power, the UM790 XTX boosts it up to 70W, making it the 1st Mini PC to feature this TDP configuration. The extra wattage should definitely help with the CPU & GPU performance as the AMD Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs can be limited in terms of power on the compact PC designs. For cooling, Minisforum makes use of the latest Cold Wave 2.1 cooling design which includes a large blower-style fan that pushes air out of the chassis & utilizes liquid metal TIM over the APU.
Furthermore, the top of the chassis can be customized with faceplates that illuminate RGB colors & look nice. There are four options that come as a standard from Minisforum but users can also select and make their own faceplates.
Another new feature is the inclusion of an Oculink port on the back I/O which uses a M.2 interface and allows the connection of a dGPU using a similar module design. So far, there aren't a whole lot of options that make use of the Oculink port besides the GPD G1 which costs a whole lot of money but Minisforum is currently experimenting with its own designs and hope to release a dGPU option for the UM790 XTX soon. There's no word on the pricing but the Pro variant goes for $519 US so this is going to cost a higher premium when it launches.
