Samsung & SK hynix Are Both In The Race To Grab The Gaming Market With GDDR7 Memory, NVIDIA Already Being Sampled According To Report
While in the past, we have reported an upturn in the HBM industry due to the AI hype, industry sources say that the GDDR market could also see a positive outlook in the future, with the primary catalyst being the adoption of next-gen GDDR7 memory. It is important to note that GDDR industry holds most of the share in consumer GPUs, and it has little to no relation with the AI boom; hence, gamers should at least take credit here.
It is disclosed by the research firm, Industry Growth Insights, that the GDDR memory market could grow up to $4.8 billion by 2030, reaching an annual growth rate of 7.6%. In particular, GDDR6 has gained immense sales traction, especially after the release of current-gen GPUs, which will hit yearly double-digit growth. For now, Micron leads the way when it comes to supplying GDDR6 to NVIDIA; however, Samsung and SK Hynix are also narrowing down the gap, which would lead to a potential shift in landscape as well.
The "holy grail" of the GDDR industry lies within the adoption of the next-gen "GDDR7" standard, and judging by previous reports, Samsung is currently in the lead. Samsung's GDDR7 memory will offer a 40% performance boost and 20% power efficiency improvement compared to the current fastest 24 Gbps GDDR6 DRAM. Micron and its competitors are still behind, with launches scheduled somewhere in 2024.
Samsung has gained the edge in manufacturing next-gen memory as it is claimed that the process has already reached validation stages, with NVIDIA taking samples for next-gen adoption. However, this certainly doesn't mean that attention will shift towards the Korean giant, which we will explain later.
NVIDIA's recent quarterly financial reports revealed a 21.7% YoY increase in gaming revenue, mainly from its GPU division; hence, we can't deny that the division doesn't hold importance for the company. However, GDDR7 memory adoption is still far away, with reports claiming a potential debut of NVIDIA's gaming lineup in 2025 with the release of "Blackwell" GPUs. This would give companies like Micron and SK Hynix ample time to develop their solutions; we could witness a really competitive GDDR industry going forward.
