GPU Market Rebounds In Q2 2023: AMD, NVIDIA & Intel See Increased Shipments, dGPU Shipments Up By 12.4% 1

Jon Peddie Research has posted its Q2 2023 market analysis, showing increased GPU shipments for AMD, Intel, & NVIDIA thanks to market normalization.

AMD, Intel, NVIDIA Secured Increased GPU Shipments As Overall Segment Goes Back In Green Thanks To PC Market Normalization

JPR reports that while the second quarter is normally down, this year, Q2 2023, saw an increase in GPU shipments and market share across all three major players including AMD, NVIDIA & Intel. It's being reported that a total of 61.6 Million GPUs shipped in Q2 2023. All GPU makers retained their overall market share with Intel securing the top spot with 68%, NVIDIA with 18% and AMD with 14% of all GPUs (dGPUs & iGPUs).

Overall & dGPU/iGPU Market Share For Q2 2023

It is reported that AMD's overall market share increased by 1.2% whereas Intel & NVIDIA declined by -0.4% and -0.8%, respectively. This was mainly due to AMD witnessing a major GPU shipments increase during Q2 of 22.9% whereas Intel and NVIDIA rose by 11.7% and 7.5%, respectively.

So let's start off with the breakdown of the dGPU and iGPU market share and shipments. Starting off with the discrete GPU which mainly includes AIBs, NVIDIA retains its dominant position with 87% market share followed by AMD's 10% and Intel's 3% share. This quarter, the dGPU market was up by 12.% which is above the 10-year average of 8.1%.

In terms of PC iGPUs, we only have two vendors here that compete with each other and these are Intel & AMD. This segment also saw a 13% increase in shipments going up to 49 Million units. Intel retains the stronghold with 84% share while AMD amounts to 16% market share here.

Desktop vs. Notebook GPU Market Share For Q2 2023

Now breaking down the overall GPU numbers in desktop and notebook segments. Notebook GPUs saw the most increase with a 73% share hold while desktop GPUs accounted for 27% of the total units. In both segments, Intel holds the top spot thanks to its massive OEM & client shipments. The desktop side also sees NVIDIA with a 31% market hold while AMD only managed 14% market share.

Meanwhile, the notebook side has both AMD and NVIDIA split almost evenly with 15% and 13% GPU share, respectively. It should be remembered that once again, AMD and Intel supply iGPUs and dGPUs on both desktop and notebook platforms so those are being accounted for in these figures.

Further breaking down the desktop & notebook GPU segment, we have the dGPU market share for desktops first with NVIDIA taking an 80% share, AMD taking a 17% share & Intel taking a 2% share. The market was slightly up versus the previous quarter and a total of 6 million units shipped. The notebook dGPU segment was also similar with a slight increase of 6 million units shipped during the previous quarter. Here, NVIDIA dominated with a 94% market share whereas Intel & AMD only held a 3% share.

Moving to the iGPU figures for desktops first, we have Intel taking the top spot with 88% share and AMD following with 12% share. A total of 10 million units shipped last quarter. On the desktop side, Intel once again retains the top spot with 84% market share and AMD comes in at 2nd spot with 16% share.

GPU Shipments Per Segment For Q2 2023

Next up, we have the GPU shipment breakdown for each segment. The integrated segment had a total of 48.82 million units shipped worldwide followed by the high-end GPU segment which saw 6.84 million GPU shipments, 2.59 million shipments in the mid-range category, and 1.81 million in the entry-level segment. Workstation GPUs also shipped 1.50 million units.

The full breakdown of the total unit shipments for each vendor under each segment can be seen below:

GPU Vendor Market Share Over Time (via JPR):

One of the more interesting charts is for the relative shipments of GPU segments which saw the notebook discrete and integrated GPU segments seeing a huge bump in the COVID-19 days. The shipments were primarily moved since everyone was working from home and even students were given online classes which required a laptop device to be near them. Meanwhile, more people had free time on their hands and that also resulted in an increase in more powerful discrete solutions (desktops and notebooks) to enjoy gaming on.

Client CPU Shipments For Q2 2023

Client CPU shipments increased by 15% over the previous quarter which also resulted in PC shipments seeing an uptick of 10%. Shipments reached up to 53.55 million units with laptop segment leading the charge.

Server GPU & CPU Shipments For Q2 2023

JPR also sheds light on the server GPU and CPU shipments which increased 18% this quarter after a declining trend that started in early 2022. Intel's server CPU shipments currently stand at 84% while AMD holds a 16% market share.

For Compute-optimized GPUs that are mainly used for cloud and datacenters, NVIDIA controls the whole market with over 300K shipments during Q2 2023 whereas Intel and AMD were around 10-20K units.

The client dGPU segment still outships the data center market but the HPC parts are sold at higher ASPs and that leads to higher margins. Especially with the hype surrounding AI, NVIDIA has been able to turn its accelerators into gold mines.

GPU & CPU Segment Forecast

Lastly, JPR provides his forecast which shows that the GPU market will continue to see steady climbs in the coming years.

The desktop segment will see high-end and mid-range solutions become the top choice while the entry-level discrete GPU market flattens due to rising performance levels of the iGPUs.
