MaxSun recently launched the world's first and only GeForce RTX 4090 GPU with five-fans but one user who bought the card discovered that the five-fan GPU runs way hotter than the 2-fan NVIDIA Founders Edition and also some MSRP-custom models.
MaxSun's Five-Fan GeForce RTX 4090 MGG Graphics Cards Runs Over 80C Temps, Customer Support Says It's Normal
So a few days ago, MaxSun, a brand we don't commonly hear about in regions outside of APAC (Asia Pacific) introduced its brand new GeForce RTX 4090 MGG "Mega Gamer" graphics card. The card is quite a unique design, featuring the standard triple-slot & triple-fan design with a silver-colored shroud and backplate that's enclosed all together in one unit.
The unique aspect of the card is that besides the triple-fan cooling solution on the top, the card also features two tiny fans on the sides which can help with cooling the gigantic aluminum fin stack that this card boasts. This fin stack comprises a 7000mm2 surface area which is solely dedicated to cooling the graphics card.
Besides that, the card also features a nice-looking RGB LED plate on the side which can be fully customized. The card features a fully customized PCB & a small factory OC while retaining the 450W TDP (powered by a single 12VHPWR connector).
So that's all about the card itself so let's get on with the initial story. A user in China recently got his hands on the MaxSun GeForce RTX 4090 MGG graphics card and after some initial tests, the results that he got were quite concerning. It didn't matter if he was running a game or FurMark, the temps were always over 80C for the GPU, and HotSpot temperatures reached up to 100C.
No overclocking was applied to the card and the room temperatures were 27-28C in the morning and 20C at night, as the user reports. Opening up the side panel of his case did lower the temps by a few degrees but these temperatures are indeed concerning considering the amount of cooling this card has to offer.
Upon taking the matter up with customer support, MaxSun reps replied by stating that these temps are fine. So far, I have tested at least 8 different GeForce RTX 4090 custom models including the reference Founders Edition and by no means is 100C HotSpot or 80C+ GPU temps fine for the RTX 4090. The card should settle around 60-65C under gaming load and top out around 70-75C with FurMark and that's when using the default Silent BIOS that most of these cards ship with. So maybe the guys running the customer support at MaxSun don't really know what they are talking about or it's just that their definition of "Normal" is just too outlandish.
The user also confirmed with another buyer who purchased the same MaxSun GeForce RTX 4090 MGG that he was also getting much higher temperatures than the one reported by him.
All of this made the buyer return the graphics card which MaxSun refused at first but after some efforts by the user (such as writing a 600-word long message), he managed to convince MaxSun to refund the card. It looks like the five-fan card may only be looks and zero function since it barely offers any cooling benefits over the wide variety of custom models from other manufacturers and the customer support happens to be the worst part.
The card itself costs 15,999 RMB which converts to $2200 US and even with the taxes added, this is a $600 US premium over the RTX 4090's MSRP.
It's a good thing that MaxSun cards aren't sold in markets outside of China otherwise this would've been taken up as a major issue. It's always recommended to see reviews of the products you are planning to buy as you can get an early insight into whether the product you are paying thousands of dollars for is actually worth it, in this case, the RTX 4090 and its wide selection of custom models.
