Starfield's performance on platforms such as consoles and PCs has stirred a debate in the industry; however, playing the demanding title on handhelds such as Steam Deck hasn't been talked about much.
Steam Deck Benchmarking Reveals That The Handheld Can Squeeze Out Adequate Performance For Starfield
Starfield has taken the industry by storm, but since I am bound to hardware, I can't comment much about in-game content (you may refer to our gaming folks for it). Thinking of playing Starfield on a handheld in the first place is an achievement on its own, but if I say you could efficiently run the game on Steam Deck, you might not believe me initially, but actual benchmarks portray a completely different situation.
Starfield has been tested on Steam Deck by several media outlets; however, ETA PRIME, a famous reviewer, went in-depth with his benchmarking process, revealing FPS figures and other decisive factors that have impressed us with the capabilities of Steam Deck. Starfield is a demanding game on paper; even the highest-end GPUs cannot squeeze out the expected performance. ETA PRIME tested Starfield on Proton Experimental, which, in layman's terms, is an upgraded version of the original Proton, at which fixes and improvements are released much earlier than ordinary upgrade cycles.
In the case of Steam Deck, though, the device can provide 30 FPS in most situations. ETA Prime went through different settings within the game, revealing that the lowest FPS he noticed was 16, which is quite impressive. However, the reviewer didn't mention the resolution the game was being played on and the graphic settings, but he did say that the settings were tuned to extract the maximum performance he could.
For those looking towards playing Starfield on a handheld, we currently advise not to do so since the game isn't as optimized in its current state. At its official launch, things could look different, but you won't see a significant performance bump, given that handhelds are generally way less capable than other platforms.
However, a year-old Steam Deck can provide a "playable" experience. We expect devices like the ROG Ally or the AYANEO KUN to bring a much more significant performance onboard. Starfield is currently entangled with problems such as poor optimization and several bugs, which have overshadowed the game's performance across several platforms. We hope things improve, especially at the launch date, since several gamers eagerly await to test the masterpiece.
