FSP has announced that it will be updating its entire 2023 PSU lineup to the latest 12V-2x6 power connectors which are part of the ATX 3.0 standard.
FSP To Upgrade Its Entire 2023 PSU Fleet With 12V-2x6 Power Connectors, ATX 3.0 & PCIe 6.0 Compliant
A few months ago, it was reported that PCI-SIG was working on a brand-new ATX 3.0 connector to replace the 12VHPWR plug. This new connector was known as the 12V-2x6 and featured some key refinements to the existing 12VHPWR 16-pin connector, making it safer and easier to use. Now, FSP has confirmed that it will be adopting the latest standards in its ATX 3.0 lineup which will be out on retail shelves this year.
This year at Computex 2023, we saw a range of products from FSP which include small form factor and goliath PSUs with up to 2500W power rating and dual 12VHPWR connectors. These were early units so it is expected that we will now see them equipped with the latest 12V-2x6 connectors. The press conference (via QuasarZone) highlighted the Hydrp G PRO series, Hydro PTM series, and the SFF Dagger PRO series as the first to utilize the new ATX 3.0 12V-2x6 connectors,
The rest of the products may also receive the updated connectors but to fully conform with the new standard, it is mentioned that a firmware update will be required for the graphics card or the PSU. Expect FSP to offer a diverse range of products ranging from Gold to Titantium rated designs to meet the power requirements of every consumer.
NVIDIA is already using the 12V-2x6 power connectors on a majority of its GeForce RTX 40 GPUs such as the RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4070, and RTX 4060. Some of the newly produced RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are also equipped with this new connector which replaces the 12VHPWR plug and makes for a very safe GPU to work with compared to the older design which can lead to melting & burns if the connector wasn't properly plugged in.
We can expect more manufacturers to bring in their ATX 3.0 "12V-2x6" PSUs this year. AMD is also open to using the 12VHPWR/12V-2x6 connectors on its GPU lineup but wants to ensure that it is safe for consumers first.
