Cyberpunk 2077's major overhaul is coming soon in the form of Update 2.0 & the Phantom Liberty expansion but it looks like it's going to be very CPU-intensive when it comes out.
Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 & Phantom Liberty Expansion To Be Very Taxing On PC & Especially 8 Core CPUs
Filip Pierściński, the lead scene programmer at CD Projekt Red, has posted over at X.com that with the Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty expansion releasing soon, PC Gamers should check if their CPUs are properly cooled since the new updates will be very taxing.
Filip goes on to state that the CPU usage is expected to reach 90% on an 8-core chip and advises testing your CPU's stability in some popular benchmark applications such as Cinebench. Following is the post by Filip:
Before release CP2077 2.0 and PL please check conditions of your cooling systems in PC. We use all what you have, so workload on CPU 90% on 8 core is expected. To save your time please run Cinebench or similar and check stability of your systems https://t.co/TWOAkP0ONu

Replying to several questions, Filip says that the reason CD Projekt Red wants to ensure good CPU thermal performance is because the game has been upgraded to support 8 cores and 16 threads natively so mods are no longer needed to achieve full utilization of the CPU. Previously, Cyberpunk 2077 modders released an unofficial SMT fix to address the lower utilization of AMD & Intel CPU architectures as reported here.
It will be natively supported. No more mod needed.

But that also results in higher temps and more power draw. As such, it will be wise to check the cooling of your CPU or you can probably end up with performance below expectations due to thermal throttling or even crash, in the worst case. It is also pointed out that it might be better to turn SMT off on 12-core or higher-core chips as that might deliver better performance but that depends on the use cases.
It looks like the CD Projekt Red team is giving everything they've got to make sure that Cyberpunk 2077 becomes a true benchmark for next-gen PCs. The update will be incorporating some of the most graphics-intensive features such as Path Tracing, RT Overdrive, and the upcoming DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction technologies to take the visual fidelity to the next level. We definitely cannot wait to try the game for ourselves when it releases with its next-gen expansion on 26 September.
