A Starfield mod released earlier this month, and updated today to work with the game's latest version, brings some significant performance improvements by addressing one of the most critical issues of the game's engine.
The Disk Cache Enabler mod, which can be downloaded from Nexus Mods, reduces disk activity by using disk cache for I/O, leading to less stuttering and much better performance. The game has an issue with a flag that tells the operating system not to leave a loaded file on memory after it is read, causing constant access to the hard drive or SSD upon which the game is installed and thus causing stuttering and performance issues. The performance improvements this mod brings are bigger if the game is installed on an HDD, but even SSD installations can see some improvements, as less disc I/O leads to better performance.
As this issue plaguing Starfield seems to be common across Bethesda's games, the creator of the Disk Cache enabler released versions of the same mod for Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4 as well.
Starfield is now available on PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S worldwide. Learn more about the latest game by Bethesda by checking out my review.
At the start of my journey in Starfield, my experience was admittedly rather dull and boring, but as I collected more Artifacts and got involved in the sprawling sci-fi universe created by Bethesda, I started warming up the game, getting to the point that I have some difficulty putting it down. While Starfield refines more than innovates the typical Bethesda formula, it is undoubtedly one of the best games ever made by the studio and one of the year's finest titles.
