AMD is preparing its ultimate RDNA 3 mobility GPU and its most powerful laptop solution to date in the form of the Radeon RX 7900M.
AMD Radeon RX 7900M To Be The Most Powerful RDNA 3 Mobility GPU: Navi 31 With MCM Technology, 72 Compute Units, 16 GB Memory
AMD's current RDNA 3 mobility GPU lineup consists of various Radeon RX 7700/7600 series chips based on the Navi 33 ASIC. These GPUs primarily target the entry-level and mainstream segment but that's about to change soon. Rumors also pointed out that high-end RDNA 3 GPUs will be coming to the mobility lineup soon.
The red team is planning to launch a new flagship RDNA 3 mobility GPU which will feature the most high-end RDNA 3 ASIC, Navi 31, with MCM technology featuring 5nm GCDs and 6nm MCDs. Labeled as the Radeon RX 7900M, this new enthusiast-class chip will integrate a cut-down Navi 31 die. It will be a cut-down configuration so you won't be getting the same level of chip as the desktop GRE, XT, or XTX variants but it will be significantly more than the Navi 32 SKUs such as the 7800 XT.
Coming to the more detailed specifications, the AMD Radeon RX 7900M features a total of 36 WGPs or 72 Compute Units which make up a total of 4608 cores. That's 20% more cores than the 7800 XT and 10% lower cores than the 7900 GRE. In terms of memory, the GPU will be equipped with a total of four MCDs which will enable a 256-bit wide bus interface and 16 GB memory capacities. That will get AMD on par with NVIDIA's top RTX 40 offerings which max out at 16 GB memory too. As for the power numbers, the AMD Radeon RX 7900M will be configured at a TGP of 160W & can be pushed up to 200W with SmartShift technologies.
The thing is that the card will be clocked much lower since the 7800 XT runs at a 263W TBP and maintains a game clock of 2124 MHz. So we might be looking at clock speeds in the sub 2.0 GHz range for the AMD Radeon RX 7900M. With that said, the performance can be expected around NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4080 GPUs which is similar to the RTX 4070 Ti desktop solution. Expect the AMD Radeon RX 7900M to launch on 19th of October which is the same day as the company will be launching its next-gen Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000WX CPUs for workstations which we leaked previously here.
