In another smuggling story, individuals were caught red-handed by China Customs as they tried to run away with thousands of CPUs, SSDs & memory kits.
Smugglers Fail Once Again Against China Customs Authorities, Thousands of PC Hardware Including CPUs Seized
The official Customs Release PR states that a driver carrying thousands of PC components was caught when he tried to pass through the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge. The Gongbei Port where the main immigration and customs checkpoint is located was where all the action took place.
[Seizure of 1,747 CPUs, memory sticks, solid-state drives and other computer accessories] At 7:00 on July 28, the customs officers of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge affiliated to Gongbei Customs used vehicle inspection equipment to scan and inspect a Guangdong-Macao cross-border bus.
Later, it was found that the machine inspection image was abnormal, and there was a suspicion of concealing and smuggling the modified car body. After further inspection of the car body, the on-site customs officers seized a large number of CPUs, memory sticks and solid-state hard drives packaged in plastic and white paper in the hidden tray installed on the chassis of the car. After counting, there were a total of 837 CPUs and 900 memory sticks. , 10 solid state drives. At present, the case has been transferred to the customs anti-smuggling department for further disposal.

It is reported that the driver was stopped by Customs for vehicle inspection as the scanning machine detected abnormalities under the car's hood. Upon physical inspection, it was clear that the bottom of the card was altered and a separate compartment was made to carry all of the smuggled PC components. The whole compartment was pulled out to reveal a total of 837 CPUs, 900 memory kits, and 10 SSDs. All of the confiscated material was transferred to the customs anti-smuggling department for disposal.
The CPUs smuggled by the individual were mostly 12th & 13th Gen Intel chips while the memory kits were a mix of Corsair DDR5 and DDR4 modules. There are no details regarding what made the SSDs but all of this equipment is worth thousands of dollars. Such activities are on the rise as we've covered multiple attempts, all of which are related to PC hardware or high-end tech devices.
Now you may be wondering why individuals are making such attempts; the reason is pretty apparent here. It is related to the taxation policy within China since there is a 13% VAT on goods when traveling to Mainland China, whereas if you travel somewhere like Hong Kong, the VAT is zero. This results in higher profit margins for the local vendors, which is why such attempts are on the rise. As such, individuals and groups involved in these activities remain at large & it is possible that the individuals also get bailed out very easily after paying a sum of cash.
