AMD has confirmed that the Radeon RX 7000 "RDNA 3" GPU family is now complete and no additional SKUs are planned though we might see a refresh.
There Will Be No More Radeon RX 7000 "RDNA 3" GPUs According To AMD But A Refresh Might Be On The Table
Talking during the pre-show of last night's Radeon Gaming event, Scott Herkelman (AMD's Senior Vice President) confirmed that their RDNA 3 portfolio featuring the Radeon RX 7000 GPU was now complete with the launch of the Radeon RX 7800 XT & RX 7700 XT GPUs. The new cards target the $499 US & $449 US high-end gaming segment and will be launching on the 6th of September with plenty of models to choose from.
With yesterday's launch, there are now six graphics cards within the Radeon RX 7000 GPU family. These include the flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX starting at $999 US, RX 7900 XT for $849 US, 7900 GRE for $649 US, 7800 XT for $499 US, 7700 XT for $449 US, and RX 7600 for $269 US. It's notable that AMD has no competition to offer within the $299-$399 US segment and that leaves a big gap since this is usually the segment where most mainstream gamers are spending.
As for the lineup itself, the RX 7900 XTX is positioned against the RTX 4080 with 24 GB VRAM, the RX 7900 XT is positioned against the RTX 4070 Ti with 20 GB VRAM, the RX 7900 GRE is positioned as an RTX 4070 competitor with 16 GB VRAM, the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT are positioned against the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 Ti with 16/12 GB VRAM and the RX 7600 is positioned against the RTX 4060 with 8 GB VRAM. The RX 7900 GRE is mostly a Chinese GPU with limited availability in global marketplaces.
Following is what AMD's Scott Herkelman had to say:
Mace (host): You have launched 7700 XT and 7800 XT. Is that going to complete the RDNA3 portfolio or is there maybe more on the horizon?
Scott: Well, the RDNA3 portfolio is now complete. Of all products that we have planned to launch, that is, this is the last few products that we will launch. We may have some different versions, but they are not a new ASIC/SKU. […] It’s been a journey, it’s been about a year since we launched the very first RDNA3 and now we are a year later finishing up the series. We should be done, we are done and we are excited. And now I think we have a broad spectrum covered for people who want RDNA3 up and down the price tag.
Scott does mention that while the AMD RDNA 3 GPU lineup is complete and there won't be any additional SKUs, there might be future versions with similar specs and minor changes but that mostly depends on market demand and competition. This may be referring to a refresh similar to AMD's Radeon RX 50XT series which was introduced with the RDNA 2 GPUs, offering higher clock speeds and TBPs. There's no word on the mobility side either which means that Navi 33 is the best that AMD has to offer to gamers with reports of a possible Navi 32 variation coming to mobile a distant dream now.
This means that AMD will end up offering almost half the amount of SKUs in its RDNA 3 family vs. its RDNA 2 lineup which featured 9 Radeon RX 6000 launches and an additional 3 refreshed parts. AMD has no plans on launching an RTX 4090 competitor even though they did mention that they could and will also not be approaching high-end gamers on the laptop segment. The GPU vendor also isn't most likely going to target the enthusiast space with its RDNA 4 lineup which launches in the coming year as per the latest rumors.
AMD does offer some great competition to NVIDIA with its RDNA 3 lineup and mostly lags behind in the ray tracing and efficiency department. Those can be tuned with RDNA 4 & further strengthened with RDNA 5 GPUs but NVIDIA isn't backing down from offering much higher performance & overall efficiency so regardless of them not having the value, they retain the performance crown which matters a lot to sustain mindshare across consumers.
