AMD is rumored to be preparing lower-clocked & lower-power Ryzen 9 7940HX & Ryzen 7 7840HX Dragon Range CPUs for laptops.
AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX & Ryzen 7 7840HX To Feature Lower-Clocks & Lower-Power Designs For Dragon Range Laptops
The information comes from Golden Pig Upgrade over at Bilibili who reports that AMD is planning to do a soft update of its existing Dragon Range "Ryzen 7045HX" CPU lineup with two new models though the naming scheme might be very confusing.
It just said that Dragon Range will not be updated next year, and then told me that it will release 7940/7840HX. The specifications are the same as 7045HX, but the frequency is slightly lower. But it’s still called 7000, which means it’s U in 2023
There are two models mentioned, the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX and the Ryzen 7 7840HX but we know that the Ryzen 7040 SKUs are part of the Phoenix family whereas these two SKUs are rumored to be a part of the Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range family. The core configurations of both models will be the same as existing models such as the Ryzen 9 7945HX and the Ryzen 7 7845HX so the biggest difference will mainly be the slightly lower clock speeds.
The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX will feature 16 Zen 4 cores, 32 threads, 16 MB of L2, and 64 MB of L3 cache whereas the Ryzen 7 7840HX will feature 12 Zen 4 cores, 24 threads, 12 MB of L2, and 64 MB of L3 cache. The current SKUs feature up to 5.4 GHz clock frequencies so we might see around 5.0 GHz clocks with the newest SKUs. It will be interesting to see just how much power AMD can tune for these two chips as they are rated at a default TDP of 55W and can go up to 75W (cTDP).
AMD is also expected to enable Dragon Range X3D supply to other OEMs as well so we are bound to see a higher number of Dragon Range laptop offerings by CES 2024. The company will unveil its next-gen Ryzen 8000 Strix Point and Hawk Point APUs at the event too though the former will only be available close to mid-2024. AMD is also currently unable to meet the demand of its existing Phoenix APUs with several vendors accusing AMD of undersupply though considering that TSMC's 4nm is quite constrained, we can't entirely blame AMD for that.
