Samsung could be preparing a Snapdragon version of the upcoming Galaxy S23 FE, which should bring some level of positivity to the Korean giant’s decision-making capabilities, as it was previously rumored that the company would only launch an Exynos version. However, there are still some things you should know about the Snapdragon version, such as that the SoC will not be the latest version.
New Geekbench benchmark details reveal that Samsung will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for the Galaxy S23 FE
Alongside the Exynos 2200 version, the Galaxy S23 FE may launch with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, according to the results displayed on Geekbench. The model number of the upcoming smartphone is SM-S711U1, indicating that it will likely be sold in the U.S. only. Other specifications show that the device was tested with Android 13, along with 8GB of RAM. As for how we found out that the Galaxy S23 FE would feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and not the improved Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, that is thanks to looking at the term ‘taro.’
While it is disappointing to see that the Galaxy S23 FE will not ship with the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, there are several reasons why Samsung would choose this path. Firstly, as most of you know, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was mass-produced on Samsung’s 4nm process, while the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 was fabricated on TSMC’s improved 4nm technology. According to earlier estimates, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is only slightly more expensive than the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, so Samsung could opt to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 to save on component costs.
It is also possible that Samsung had some Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 inventory left over and wished to use the remaining SoCs in the Galaxy S23 FE so it does not have to incur a loss later on in its financial reports. As for the expected launch, we believe that the price-to-performance flagship will not arrive before Q4, but by then, it might be too late. Remember that the Nothing Phone (2) is priced at $599 in the U.S. and features the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. Assuming the Galaxy S23 FE launches at a higher price, the Nothing Phone (2) would already have undercut it significantly.
However, there are other areas where the Galaxy S23 FE could show improvements, such as the camera or battery life, so it is best not to judge the handset too quickly based on the hardware it will ship with. As always, we will update our readers in the future, so stay tuned.
