The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 are finally official. Now that the dust has settled, we are finally getting more information about the latest foldable phones from Samsung. If you are interested in getting your hands on these devices, you can go ahead and preorder, but you must know that these phones could have been a lot more different than what they are today.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 prototypes show that Samsung did want to innovate but decided to walk the safer route
It turns out that Samsung had a bunch of prototypes prepared for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. These prototypes mainly show the devices in a variety of aspect ratios along with different materials. This gives us the idea that the phones could have been a lot different than what Samsung announced last night.
Based on some videos shared by Ray Wong, we see that Samsung tried a number of different aspect ratios and materials for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. For instance, the folding phone could have been available in any one of these aspect ratios 19.5:9, 21:9, 22:9, and 23:9. Samsung even had 3D printed prototypes in aspect ratios such as 22.5:9 and 21.5:9. This means that we could have had a wider foldable before Samsung decided to choose the 23.1:9 aspect ratio for the cover display.
Believe it or not, Samsung explored other aspect ratios for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 like these prototypes in 19.5:9, 21:9, 22:9, and 23:9#SamsungUnpacked pic.twitter.com/0uhmiPoS9D

In addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and various aspect ratios, it appears that Samsung also experimented with various colors, materials, and finishes for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 before settling on the colors that the company eventually did go for.

There's so much that goes into designing products. I just love looking at this kinda stuff!

I am honestly really glad that Samsung tested all these prototypes for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. If anything, it shows that the company is actually willing to bring something that is different rather than actually rehashing the same-looking product every year. At the same time, I do get the frustration that people have with the Fold 5 looking exactly the same as the last generation of foldable, but if you are looking to pick one device up, I would highly suggest you go for the Flip 5, as that phone is an excellent upgrade for those who want a good experience.
Maybe next year, we will see Samsung release different variations of the foldable phones, but until that happens, you will have to settle with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 that have hit the market. The phones are available for preorder and should be hitting the shelves on 11th August next month.
