Based on the information that surfaced in Zoom's updated terms of service, it appears that the company is going to start using some customer data to train its AI model or machine learning model. This new change went into effect on July 27th and basically grants the platform teh right to use some degree of customer data for the sake of training.
Zoom wants to start using specific customer information to train its AI model, but you don't have to worry that much for now
Now, this might not seem like a big deal to a lot of people, but the "service-generated data" that Zoom is calling will actually train its AI using customer information on product usage, telemetry and diagnostic data, and similar content or data collected by the company. The worst part here is that you cannot really opt out of the data collection. So, as far as I know, deleting your account is perhaps the only option.
Now, it is important to know that companies collecting this sort of data are not a rare thing, ot be honest. However, the main question comes from the situation that Zoom is collecting all this data, and that too for training its AI models in the first place. If you go read the fine print, this is what you are going to find there,
You consent to Zoom’s access, use, collection, creation, modification, distribution, processing, sharing, maintenance, and storage of Service Generated Data for any purpose, to the extent and in the manner permitted under applicable Law, including for the purpose of product and service development, marketing, analytics, quality assurance, machine learning or artificial intelligence (including for the purposes of training and tuning of algorithms and models).
This means that user messages, files, and documents are not going to be included. Zoom also clarified that they are not going to be using audio, video, or chat for the sake of training the AI model. However, things get a bit scary because the statement also says that these elements are not used "without customer consent," which is a concerning element because at what point will customers get to decide whether or not they want to share this content with the platform.
Honestly, I am not really worried about Zoom working on the feature. So many other platforms and services are already gathering such information. The good thing is that the company is at least upfront, but for many people, this still raises some concerns, and I am wondering how the customers will take it.
