This option was introduced some time ago, and the reason behind this is rather simple - to keep your chats secure in case your phone ends up in hands it shouldn't be in. Now, the feature is extended to the Web version. This is for those who are using the messaging app on their laptops or desktops. I know a lot of people who do, and it is a lot more convenient than checking your phone again and again.
WhatsApp will let you lock your chats behind a password on the Web version, with beta rolling out now
On your device, you can lock WhatsApp chats behind biometrics, but if you are wondering how this would work, you will be able to lock your chats using a password. Now, if you are looking for this feature, you are going to have to head over to the Privacy Settings, and under there, you will see an option that will allow you to set the password. Again, this is still in beta stages, meaning that it is not available for everyone.
Now, it is worth noting that this does not lock individual chats behind passwords. That feature is still limited to WhatsApp on mobile devices. So you are going to have to wait for that feature to finally be available. Another thing to note here is that this locking method does not make use of the computer's biometrics, so even if your computer does have some form of biometrics available, it will not work, and you will have to rely on a password.
At the time of writing, the feature is rolling out to the WhatsApp Web 2.2333.11 beta and is only available for select beta testers. It is safe to assume that in the coming days, it will extend to more users, and when it does, we will keep you posted.
Honestly, I have been using WhatsApp for as long as I can remember, and I don't really feel the need to lock chats unnecessarily behind a password. It surely is a nice feature, but I cannot imagine myself using it at all.
