Apple is expected to announce the new Apple Watch Series 9 at its special event on the first of September. While the Series 9 would feature a brand-new S9 chip based on the A15 Bionic chip, the external design language will be identical to the Series 8. Henceforth, the company would have to bring new features to the table to entice users to upgrade to the new model. We are now hearing that Apple is looking to incorporate strain gauge sensors for the Apple Watch that could offer tracking strength training activities.
Apple is testing strain sensors for the Apple Watch, aiding individuals in strength training workouts
The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are one of the major upgrades expected at the event but there are not many reasons to upgrade to the forthcoming model. Yes, the S9 chip will come with enhanced performance and efficiency gains, but it is still not that big of a reason to upgrade from the Series 7 or 8. This is because Apple's upcoming watchOS 10 upgrade will be available on older Apple Watch models as well that would carry most of the forward-facing features. The company is now testing a strain sensor for future Apple Watch models that could make its way to Series 9 (via MyHealthyApple).
Apple's job listing from its health department requires engineers that know their way around analog electronics, mechatronics, strain gauges, photodiodes, and more. The potential employee will be responsible for designing, testing, and troubleshooting the rumored sensors for the Apple Watch. Currently, the Apple Watch already houses the aforementioned sensors other than a strain gauge and it would only mean that the company is working to introduce another major health-tracking addition to its wearable.
The strain gauge sensor would measure the electrical resistance of a user when he or she applies force. This specific sensor would be helpful for users who are in strength workout tracking. Currently, the Apple Watch does not allow users to measure their strength training activities, allowing a whole niche to be absent from the wearable. Take note that the company is only testing this feature for now and we are not sure if it would arrive next month with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 9.
It was recently reported by Mark Gurman that Apple is planning to redesign its wearable with the launch of the Apple Watch X next year. Potentially, if the technology is ready, Apple will introduce the strain sensor on the Apple Watch X next year. We will keep you guys updated on the latest, so be sure to stick around.
