We have been seeing some excellent foldable phones this year, with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 being one of them. It could easily be argued that Samsung's offering is the king of foldable phones as it has brought several internal improvements that have significantly improved the device's durability. Still, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is here to challenge Samsung's claim to the top, and honestly, it does bring a compelling argument.
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 takes the fight to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 with better hardware and durability
Calling a foldable modern doesn't make sense considering how all the foldable in the market are modern, to begin with. If you are looking for something that looks great, then the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is the phone for you. You can get the phone in composite fiber or the traditional glass back. Even the thickness differs among the two variants, with the composite fiber measuring 10.86mm thick when folded and 5.26mm when unfolded. For the glass, you are looking at 10.96mm thick, and of course, the latter is also just four grams heavier at 259 grams.
Xiaomi did not go with the thinness factor like the Honor Magic V2 but instead focused on durability. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is equipped with a proprietary hinge, and according to the company, the new hinge design is rated for 500,000 folds, which is an impressive number, to be honest, and I am waiting for someone to put this to the test.
The new hinge also allows the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 to unfold between 45 and 135 degrees. While this feature is nothing new, I am glad that it is finally making its way to the Mix Fold lineup since the past generation foldable phones were not able to do that. Sadly, we are unsure if you are getting any ingress protection, but I would not put a foldable phone in water if I were you.
Getting to the specs, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 brings a 6.56-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. On the inside, you get an 8.03-inch LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and ultra-thin glass. The phone is not compromising at all on the camera system because you are getting a 50-megapixel Sony IMX8000 primary sensor with a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a duo of 10-megapixel telephoto cameras, one at 3.2x and the other one at 5x, making the phone a compelling device for cameras.
The rest of the specs are nothing to scoff at because the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 brings a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a beefy 4,800 mAh battery, and 67W wired and 50W wireless charging. At the time of writing, the phone is available in China only and will cost you 8,999 yuan or approximately $1,239 for the base 12/256GB variant. If you are looking for the 16GB/1TB variant, that will run you 10,999 yuan or approximately $1,515. The phone is set to hit the shelves on August 16th, later this week. Considering Xiaomi's previous releases, the phone could end up hitting the global markets, but at the moment, we cannot confirm if that is happening.
