ISOCELL cameras boasting incredibly high resolutions of 200MP have been Samsung’s forte for quite a while, with the company incorporating such hardware in its top-tier flagships, including the Galaxy S23 Ultra. For next year, expect the exact same treatment to be delivered to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but one tipster reveals Samsung plans to go beyond the 200MP threshold as it prepares three new sensors for the latter half of 2024, with one of them being a 440MP camera.

Out of the three sensors, Samsung is said to be mass producing a new 50MP GN6 with a 1.6μm pixel size, according to Revegnus. In his post, he also mentions that a new 200MP HP7 unit with a 0.6μm pixel size is presumably under development. Perhaps the Korean giant’s most ambitious plan yet in the ISOCELL camera department is a 400MP HU1 with an unconfirmed pixel size. Though all three sensors are said to undergo mass production in the second half of 2024, the post does not mention which devices will be outfitted with these.
Our hunch tells us that if all these sensors are produced in H2 2024, then the 440MP one will be reserved for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. As most of you know, Samsung is working on its ‘dream chip,’ a new silicon that can reportedly go head-to-head with the flagship SoCs. Current-generation chipsets cannot support any sensor with an image resolution of 440MP right now, so it was only a matter of time before a capable silicon would launch and obtain that support.

It is also worth mentioning that beyond a certain megapixel count on a smartphone, manufacturers will start seeing diminishing returns on using 200MP or 440MP sensors on devices, so they will have to resort to other measures, such as increasing the physical size of those sensors. The post does not mention how Samsung will crap a 440MP unit into a smartphone chassis, but the image quality may not improve without the use of a bigger sensor.
Since Samsung’s plans have not been mentioned by Revegnus, it is pointless to comment further, except await future rumors. However, if a 440MP should debut in the Galaxy S25 Ultra, we definitely look forward to seeing what imaging magic it can conjure up.
