Changing a CPU's clock speed is nothing new, at least not in the PC world where I am from. PC enthusiasts have been doing this for years and without stopping. However, changing the clock speed of a smartphone's processor is still something that is new, and not a lot of people are familiar with the idea of it. Sure, you can root your phone and get started with overclocking or underclocking, but the Realme GT5 is about to become the first phone that will officially let you do it without any other tools required. While this is great, it does raise some concerns that I will talk about later in this post.
The Realme GT5 will let you overclock its CPU, but this raises concerns about thermal throttling and the phone's overall safety
The Realme GT5 is the upcoming smartphone from the Chinese firm, and they have confirmed that the upcoming smartphone will let you adjust the clock speeds of your phone's CPU. For those wondering, the new flagship will launch with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and while that is nothing new, the ability to overclock the CPU is something that we have not officially seen in any smartphone.
As you can see in the image above that was shared on Webi, you can choose from different clock speeds. I am not sure if you are going to get an option for manual overclocking but presets are not a bad thing, either, especially for those who are not well-versed in the concept of overclocking. Although the Realme GT5 is the first phone to get this feature, I do hope that this feature extends to other devices, as well.
Now, although it is excellent that Realme GT5 is taking a step further, I do have some questions in terms of thermal throttling and other heat-related issues. It is good that manual controls are not a thing at the moment because people unfamiliar with overclocking and how it works could end up damaging their devices. I do believe that Realme has validated these settings, so you won't be running into any issues as far as the device's safety is concerned.
The good news is that the Realme GT5 is a powerhouse through and through, as it will feature up to 24 gigs of RAM, 1TB of storage and will be launching on August 28th in China. There is a chance of seeing this device launch globally, so we will keep an eye out for when that happens.
