Apple is planning to host an event in September to announce its forthcoming iPhone 15 lineup and Apple Watch Series 9. However, the company is also working to upgrade the iPad Pro lineup with a new display and potentially a new design. It was previously reported that Apple will equip the iPad Pro with an OLED panel which could come with a new M3 chip based on TSMC's 3nm process.
OLED iPad Pro to launch with iPhone-like screens next year with a new M3 chip based on a 3nm process
Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman states in his latest Power On newsletter that the upgraded iPad Pro models will feature an OLED panel similar to the iPhone models. Take note that Gurman is talking about the OLED screen which was introduced with the iPhone X in 2017. Apple continues to offer OLED panels to this day, and the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models will also come with the same display type but with slightly tweaked colors and brightness levels.
Before introducing OLED screens on the iPhone, Apple used LCD on the iPhone 7 and earlier models. The company still plays around with LCDs on the budget-friendly iPad Air and iPad mini lineup. As for the higher-end models, Apple started using a mini-LED display. However, the display is exclusive to the bigger 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The 11-inch model still rocks an LCD panel. Now, both models are expected to rock an OLED display for a better viewing experience. Apple will eventually transition to microLED display starting with the Apple Watch, then moving toward the iPhone and iPad.
While mini-LED is great on the bigger iPad Pro, it still falls short when it comes to the benefits of an OLED panel. The OLED display will offer better color accuracy, and higher brightness levels, and will consume less power overall. Combined with the low power-hungry nature of the M3 chip, the iPad Pro will deliver better battery life than the current models. Additionally, the M3 chip will also deliver enhanced computational and graphical performance, potentially on par with some MacBooks.
If Apple is planning to redesign the iPad Pro models, it could slash off some of the bezels. The iPad Pro has featured more or less the same design since 2018. Samsung has cut down on the bezels on its new Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra and the device looks pretty sleek in our opinion. Potentially, Apple could follow the same route as well. Gurman also notes that Apple will launch a redesigned Magic Keyboard with the new devices next year which will minimize the gap between an iPad and a Mac. However, nothing can be said for sure at this point since the final word rests with Apple.
