Huawei has not been an active part of the U.S. market since the end of 2018. While almost five years is more than enough to kill a company, Huawei is still kicking strong and releasing new phones, and although not with the same frequency, the latest Huawei Mate 60 Pro confirms that the company still has what it takes to make a compelling phone for the domestic market.
The Huawei Mate 60 Pro is an excellent phone that should have seen a global launch
The Huawei Mate 60 Pro does not look much different from the rest of the phones in teh series, but it does receive some notable upgrades. You are looking at a three-punch-hole camera design on the front, one being a selfie camera, while the remaining two sensors are from 3D face unlocking that the phone supports.
The moment you look at the back, you realize that the Huawei Mate 60 Pro also comes with a two-tone rear cover. The black and purple variants of the phone will feature a leather back, while the green and silver colorways are made using brocade fiber, a distinct choice for sure. The phone does have an IP68 rating, so you don't have to worry about getting it wet. You are also getting the satellite calling feature, which is a first in a smartphone since we normally see satellite SOS text messaging. The feature, however, is currently limited to China Telecom, but it might expand in the future.
As far as the specs are concerned, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro is going to offer a 6.82-inch LTPO display on the front, 12 gigs of RAM, up to 1TB of storage that you can even expand further using NM card, and 5,000 mAh battery with respectable 88W wired and 50W wireless charging. The phone uses an in-house Kirin octa-core chipset, along with an in-house Maleoon 910 GPU.
Of course, one of the most significant selling points for Huawei phones has always been the camera, and it is no different for the Huawei Mate 60 Pro as the phone brings a triple-camera set up on the back. The primary 50-megapixel camera brings a variable aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0. You are also getting a 48-megapixel 3.5x telephoto camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. On the front, you get a modest 13-megapixel sensor.
Although Huawei did not confirm it, you should not expect this phone to go on sale outside China. It's been some time since the company went for a global launch, and I would not be surprised if the Mate 60 Pro does not launch outside the domestic market.
