Smartphone makers will eventually transition from foldable smartphones to rollable ones, and Techno has recently joined the bandwagon with its Phantom Ultimate concept. According to the company, the device uses a single-drive motor system to expand the display, presenting more screen real estate to the user.
Techno claims that even with the display completely expanded, the rollable smartphone is easy to use with a single hand
In its default state, the Phantom Ultimate flaunts a 6.55-inch LTPO OLED screen with an unusual 2296 x 1596 resolution. The display can expand to 7.11 inches when measured diagonally using the single-drive motor system we mentioned earlier. The expansion of the panel can take place using a single button, with Techno claiming that the rollable smartphone concept can take between 1.2 and 1.3 seconds to expand completely.
Since this is just a concept, the time taken to increase the display may be reduced, otherwise, it can termed as a gimmick that takes too long to be deemed usable. Also, the difference between 6.55 inches and 7.11 inches is not exceptionally large, but if users want a slightly increased amount of screen real estate, it is available with the push of a button.
Techno has not commented on whether a commercial unit will enter mass production or if the company intends to increase the expanded display size. A small part of that display is present at the back, showing important information such as notifications and also serving as a vertical viewfinder for the selfie camera.
Since there are motorized parts used in the rollable smartphone, the Phantom Ultimate’s thickness is 9.93mm, making it thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s 13.4mm when it is folded but thicker when unfolded. In the video below, the device looks like a seamless member of the rollable smartphone club, but we are sure that a closer look will reveal the design and manufacturing blemishes.
Also, since this Phantom Ultimate is just a concept, Techno has provided no estimated launch timeline and has not commented on its price either. However, this rollable smartphone does signify the manufacturer’s interest in this category, so it is possible we see something in the future.
