A multitude of reports stated that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max would receive a price hike in between the $100-$200 range. Just like last year, when Apple was rumored to increase the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max prices, the company defied all background whispers again to only make its top-tier model $100 more expensive than its predecessor. There are several reasons as to why Apple would not be left with a choice in this matter, so let us discuss.
Apple offers customers twice the storage for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which itself was a $100 upgrade last year
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are separated by a few differences in the hardware specifications section, starting with the base storage. With the iPhone 15 Pro, you get 128GB of internal storage, so if Apple were to introduce a price hike to the 6.1-inch model, the company might have been criticized for this move, but instead of going down this route, only a $100 price increase to the iPhone 15 Pro Max with twice the storage seems justifiable.
Even if Apple procured additional NVMe storage chips at a lower price, other upgrades would have forced Apple’s hand in increasing the price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, starting with the A17 Pro SoC. It is the first chipset that is made on TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm architecture, and according to earlier reports, the manufacturer’s wafers were said to cost $20,000. In this regard alone, Apple would have had sufficient motivation to increase the pricing, and yet it did not.
Also, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the only model in the entire lineup to feature a 5x telephoto camera, with the iPhone 15 Pro limited to 3x zoom, just like the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max from last year. Re-designing the internals, particularly the camera, in a compact space is a difficult feat to achieve and requires millions in research. Apple would naturally want to reimburse those investments through a price hike.
However, it goes without saying that a price hike is still a hike, and customers still expect generational improvements with every iPhone release for the same price. Then again, the iPhone 15 Pro Max features more exclusive upgrades than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, so consumers might ignore that $100 price increase after looking at what they get in return.
