Apple recently announced the new iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro models at its Wonderlust event. While the 'Pro' models were the highlight of the event, the company also introduced the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus alongside the Apple Watch Series 9. The camera upgrades were massive this year, especially with the bigger iPhone 15 Pro Max. The device comes with a new telephoto lens that can capture photos and videos at 5x optical zoom. However, the company did not share details on the maximum zoom capability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The 5x optical zoom on iPhone 15 Pro Max enables up to 25x digital zoom, but it is still far behind the competition
A 5x optical zoom on the latest Pro Max is a major upgrade considering its predecessor can only go as high as 3x. However, in comparison to Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra, the iPhone 15 Pro Max still falls short as the device can go up to a 100x digital zoom. If you are not familiar, the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 5x optical zoom will allow up to 25x digital zoom. The Pixel 7 can go as high as 30x digital zoom as well.
We can presume that Apple is playing it safe with the digital zoom as its competitors make use of a hefty amount of computational elements. Apple's computational photography revolves around enhancing photos that can only go up to 25x. The 5x optical zoom is only available on the bigger model as the smaller 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro can only take photos and videos up to 3x, similar to last year's iPhone 14 Pro Max. You can check out more details in our announcement post.
Other than the optical zoom capabilities, the iPhone 15 Pro models also come with variable focal lengths that can be adjusted and set as default as per user's preferences. To be fair, the entire iPhone 15 lineup has received major camera upgrades, keeping the devices up to date with technology and innovation that will last for years.
