The iPhone 15 Pro might not be the best smartphone of this year, but it easily is one of the best, and a lot of that has to do with the cameras that come with the phone. Apple has gone with the same three-camera setup on the back. However, this time around, the company did something different.
The iPhone 15 Pro is an excellent phone all around but Apple should be more honest about how the cameras work
Instead of simply talking about how the iPhone 15 Pro's 48-megapixel camera can shoot at different focal lengths, Apple talked about how the phone has seven cameras in total. That is because the main 48-megapixel sensor can shoot at 48mm, 35mm, 28mm, and 24mm. Whereas the telephoto can go as high as 120mm, and the third lens can either do macro or 13mm, for that matter. Now, all of this sounds really good, but it is just a marketing tactic because that really is not the case.
Now, the iPhone 15 Pro is equipped with a 48-megapixel camera that has a fixed focal length of 24mm. Every focal length beyond that is entirely digital and not at all optical. This means that 28mm, 35mm, and 48mm are all digital, as the lens itself is mechanically not capable of moving. Even the 12-megapixel telephoto is actually 77mm instead of 120mm, as Apple has marketed.
Now, this might not matter a lot to an average Joe who is just going to get his hands on the phone and start shooting photos. But if you are spending $999 and above on a new iPhone 15 Pro just because Apple has promised you a camera nirvana, then you might want to read up a bit more. Now, I won't completely take the credit away from Apple. Sure, this would count as misleading, but if the new iPhone can prove that its digital zoom is almost as good as optical zoom, then one might consider that the company was not misleading the consumers.
The main reason why I have written this post is that there is a lot of difference between digital zoom and optical zoom. The latter has much better quality, depth of field, colors, and clarity, whereas the former is... well, let's just call it glorified cropping because that is what it is. Thankfully, the iPhone 15 Pro is equipped with a 48-megapixel sensor, so the deterioration that comes from cropping should not be a lot, but only a proper camera test will reveal that.
