At the time of writing, you can find several smartphones in the market that are available with a 200-megapixel primary sensor, and while this certainly is a good thing. Samsung, the company responsible for making such a massive camera, is now looking at a 200-megapixel telephoto camera, and if this does go through, it could change the smartphone photography landscape for the better.

Samsung actually published an article on its website and talked about how the 200-megapixel camera is the “next big thing in smartphone photography.” The company talks about how users prefer to use the telephoto camera mainly because there is less distortion when compared to the main camera, and here is a look at what the company is talking about.
While this certainly looks impressive, Samsung has also talked about how telephoto camera sensors are generally smaller than primary camera sensors. This means that there is a quality difference between these cameras. This can be mitigated by bringing a larger telephoto sensor that will improve the overall quality and increase a shallower depth of field for portraits, too.
Another benefit that Samsung pointed out is that having a 200-megapixel camera sensor means that you can easily take an image and crop it as much as you want before you realize that the image starts to pixelate. As a matter of fact, current phones that are equipped with 200-megapixel cameras can often offer lossless crop up to 5 times, which means that with a 200-megapixel telephoto lens, you will be able to dial in the perfect aspect ratio and framing of the picture you are trying to take.
There is no denying that all of this sounds and looks very impressive. The main thing here is going to be the implementation and when we get to see the new sensors. Knowing Samsung, the company is going to take its time perfecting the sensor before it is ready for prime time, and when it is available for everyone, we will be sure to let you know. As someone who uses a telephoto camera a lot more than the primary sensor, I think this could really benefit mobile photographers, and I cannot wait to see what other tricks Samsung has for us.
I would want this camera to make its debut in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but given how Samsung is cutting down on the telephoto department on its upcoming flagship, that might not be the case. Still, stick around and find out what happens.
