Samsung could be cutting down costs on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but in one of the worst ways possible, according to one rumor originating from China. The company might be using a smaller vapor chamber for next year’s flagship, which is said to compromise the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s multi-core performance.

It was previously reported that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy achieved 7,400 points in Geekbench 6 for the multi-core benchmark, putting it ahead of Apple’s latest 3nm A17 Pro, which managed to obtain just 7,199 points in the same application. However, according to a rumor shared by Mochamad Farido Fanani on X, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 may be prone to thermal throttling on the Galaxy S24 Ultra due to the lack of an effective heat dissipation solution.
This can mean that the flagship may have a smaller vapor chamber than the Galaxy S23 Ultra, compromising the chipset’s performance. The decision to cut down cost on the Galaxy S24 Ultra will not be welcomed by consumers, but it appears that Samsung has little choice in the matter. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy is said to be more expensive than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which was already a pricey silicon with an estimated price of $160 apiece.
Samsung could offset the high price of Qualcomm’s upcoming SoC, and raise margins by reducing the copper used to dissipate the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. However, a separate report claims that the South Korean firm intends to remove the 10x optical zoom upgrade from the Galaxy S24 Ultra due to the same cost-cutting reasons, showing that more compromises might be on the way.
