The new iPhone 15 models not only give users exclusive hardware upgrades, but from the looks of it, Apple is also giving the new owners access to software-baked features that were not available in earlier models. Recently, we reported that there are three new battery health options added; Optimized Battery Charging, 80% limit, and None, and in the latest iOS 17.1 Beta, the features were not seen in the iPhone 14 lineup or the ones released before.
iOS 17.1 is still in its testing phases, so Apple might change its mind and add the newer battery health features in a later update
In Apple’s support document, when talking about limiting the total charge to 80 percent, the company only talks about the iPhone 15 models, suggesting that these features will remain exclusive to just the four versions that went on sale not too long ago, likely irking older iPhone owners. Joe Rossignol from MacRumors confirmed that the features have yet to arrive for anything launched before the iPhone 15, but the report maintains its optimism regardless.
“With iPhone 15 models, you can choose between Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, and None. When you choose 80% Limit, your iPhone will charge up to about 80 percent and then stop charging. If the battery charge level gets down to 75 percent, charging will resume until your battery charge level reaches about 80 percent again.”
Since iOS 17.1 Beta is still in its testing phase, it is still possible that these new battery health features will make their way to older iPhone models. To remind you, the three settings on each iPhone 15 model are separate from the already existing ‘Optimized Battery Charging’ on current ones. ‘Optimized Battery Charging’ delays the charge level when the handsets reach the 80 percent threshold.
On the latest versions, when the ‘80% limit’ option is selected, the battery percentage will not exceed the mentioned charge level. Assuming Apple does not bring the new features to older models, and users want to keep those devices in their ownership, they will have to proceed with an authorized battery replacement procedure by spending extra money.
