Apple introduced an Action button for the first time on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, effectively replacing the mute switch but giving users an extra layer of functionality. However, some case manufacturers believed that the Action button would not materialize on any model, and in their lack of foresight, misdesigned the accessories to the extent that they now have to design and manufacture new batches for existing customers.
Instead of a button that would aid in clicking the Action button, some case makers went ahead and made a cutout instead
The majority of case makers do not have exact information available surrounding the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and that is likely because Apple remains tight-lipped out of fear that the design of its next handsets is not covered by multiple media outlets. Though some accessory makers may have special privileges that allow them to mass produce accurate add-ons for the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max prior to the official launch, others do not and have to rely on a multitude of rumors to get the ball rolling.
One of those companies happened to be Peak Design, and according to a Reddit post from the manufacturer’s founder, Peter Dering that was spotted by The Verge, the company did not have exact information in the form of 3D details that allowed the firm to know beforehand what sort of hardware changes Apple would bring to its newest ‘Pro’ lineup.
“We actually do not have the literal 3D details from Apple, and so we are reliant on industry rumors to inform the design. In the case of the new “Action Button,” there were rumors in both the switch and the button direction, and we also did not have much information on how a potential button would be used. Because of these conflicting rumors, we opted for the safer route and designed a cutout that would give good access to the button feature or a switch depending on which rumor ended up being the actual truth.”
It is reported that Peak Design manufactured and shipped 30,000 cases of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with a cutout instead of a button before it realized that the decision actually ended up being a subpar design choice. Thankfully, the company is taking responsibility for its actions and will create updated designs, though availability can take between four to six weeks. In the meantime, Peak Design is developing a solution to retrofit a button for those who have already purchased a case.
Additionally, while it pursues a design change in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max cases, Peak Design has made a support page and will provide between $15 to $40 in store credit to those who have already made purchases. Other brands, such as Nomad, made the right bet by fixing a physical button on its latest cases, while Bellroy went down the same yellow path as Peak Design. We recommend viewing the case images carefully before making a purchase because, with a cutout, it can become difficult to comfortably press the Action button.
