Apple's latest Apple Watch Ultra 2 comes with an upgraded display that reaches brightness levels as high as 3,000 nits. We have previously heard that Apple is working on its in-house microLED displays for its products but it will take some time before the company decides to incorporate them in the iPhone lineup. A new report claims that Apple's transition to its microLED displays will begin with the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025.
Apple plans to transition its entire product line to microLED display technology, starting with the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025
According to a Weibo leaker that goes by the name of Instant Digital, the next major Apple Watch Ultra upgrade will house a microLED display. We have previously reported that Apple could see fit to launch the display technology with the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025. The latest leak corroborates past rumors regarding the transition and its launch time frame. The news was initially coined by display analyst Ross Young in January of this year. TrendForce believed that the device could see some delays and launch would be pushed back to 2026.
if you are not familiar, the microLED display on the Apple Watch Ultra will feature a 2.12-inch display which will be at least 10 percent bigger than that of the current model. microLED display technology will allow for enhanced brightness levels better contrast ratio, and deeper blacks. After its initial introduction with the Apple Watch Ultra, Mark Gurman believes that Apple will be bringing the display technology to its entire product line, including the iPhone and iPad.
Gurman suggests that Apple's move to switch to microLED display technology on its entire product line is similar to the Apple Silicon transition. With Apple Silicon, the company gained independence from Intel-based processors which the company had no control over. On the display side of things, Apple heavily relies on Samsung for OLED panels for the iPhone. The company aims to reduce or end its partnership with Samsung for displays in the future once its microLED display technology is ready.
It remains to be seen how Apple will compete against Samsung in the display manufacturing department and what impact would it have on the market. It seems that Apple will begin its transition to microLED display technology with the launch of a major Apple Watch Ultra upgrade in 2025. Take note that the technology will not see daylight for the iPhone for another couple of years. Nonetheless, the company will gradually transition its entire product line to microLED technology.
