Samsung may have skipped a chipset launch this year, but for 2024, the company has officially unveiled its newest high-end SoC, the Exynos 2400, bringing in multiple improvements over the Exynos 2200. The new chip was unveiled during the company’s System LSI Tech Day, and while all the details are not available, let us discuss what Samsung talked about during the announcement.
New Xclipse 940 GPU to bring in improved ray tracing performance, with the Exynos 2400 rumored to feature a 10-core CPU configuration
Samsung did not provide specifics on the CPU cluster of the Exynos 2400, but earlier rumors claim that the SoC will have a 10-core configuration. It is also reported that the newest chipset has been fabricated on the company’s 4nm LPP+ process, delivering improved power efficiency over the 4nm LPP (Low Power Plus), which was used to mass produce the Tensor G3 fueling the Pixel 8’s and Pixel 8 Pro’s innards.
The company states that a live demo was showcased during the event, showing the capabilities of the RDNA3-based Xclipse 940 GPU and its ray tracing attributes. Though no numbers were provided, Samsung states that the new graphics processor delivered visual effects such as global illumination, reflection, and shadow rendering. The A17 Pro also supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, so it will be interesting to see how both chipsets perform against one another.
Perhaps the biggest performance this year is in the CPU department, with Samsung claiming that the Exynos 2400 can deliver a substantial 70 percent improvement in compute and a 14.7 times increase in AI performance compared to the Exynos 2200. Samsung also introduced a new AI tool designed for upcoming handsets and demonstrated text-to-image AI generation using the Exynos 2400 reference board.
The new chipset will likely power the Galaxy S24 lineup next year, but there is no mention that Samsung intends to sell the Exynos 2400 to other smartphone partners for various markets. On paper, the differences between the Exynos 2200 are otherworldly, but there is still so much that we do not know as yet. However, before the official announcement, we reported about an earlier GPU performance test, and unfortunately, the Exynos 2400’s Xclipse 940 GPU came up short against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s Adreno 740.
We will wait for more specification details to follow, along with more performance comparisons and, most importantly, power efficiency metrics to see how far Samsung’s foundry has advanced this year. We do believe that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will still have the edge over the Exynos 2400 for next year, but how big of a gap will there be? We will update our readers in the future.
