The advertising giant has not revealed the copious details, but iFixit will likely be Google’s partner in providing those replacement parts and services for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Soniya Jobanputra, director of product management at Google, told Android Authority the following concerning the company’s long-term commitment to the latest models.
“Parts will be available for seven years. That’s part of our commitment as we go to the seven years (sic) that we need to make our parts available so you can keep your hardware alive for that long.”
Google briefly talked about partnering with iFixit during its official announcement of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, so it is expected that parts, services, and repair guides will be available from them. Unfortunately, even though providing parts for 7 seven years is exceptional from Google, it looks as if this time period will only be offered to Pixel customers in the U.S. As Google expands its market coverage, it should add more partners into the mix.
In an early teardown video of the Pixel 8, we noticed that Google incorporated fewer screws to remove the logic board, along with a clearly labeled pull tab to help remove the battery. However, the USB-C port was soldered to the board, making user repairs difficult, but at least some steps are being taken in the right direction when looking out for the consumer.
