A rumor was circulating yesterday on how Samsung would end its GPU licensing partnership with AMD in pursuit of its own custom solution that would likely be featured in future Exynos chipsets and other applications. An update to that information is that the agreement is very much alive and that upcoming custom GPUs from Samsung will be based on AMD’s technology.

The custom GPU will not be possible without leveraging AMD technology, which is why Revegnus has posted below that Samsung is not terminating its partnership. To be fair, having a long-term business alliance with AMD is the only path for Samsung to develop a custom GPU, as starting from scratch is a difficult endeavor. Even with current Galaxy S models, the company has resorted to using ARM’s GPU designs instead of incorporating its in-house solution, indicating that it does not possess the expertise to develop its own graphics processor.
The tipster @OreXda, who posted about the rumor yesterday, has also acknowledged that he was missing something in the previous post, thereby admitting that he was incorrect in his earlier assumption. The custom GPU from Samsung may only debut with the Exynos 2500, as this SoC is said to be the company’s ‘Dream Chip’ that will help launch the manufacturer to new heights. There was a ton of hype built around the Exynos 2200 and its Xclipse 920 GPU based on AMD’s RDNA2 architecture, but the chipset was a bitter disappointment.

Apart from beating the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in ray tracing, the Xclipse 920 has nothing else going for it. The Xclipse 940, which is said to be found in the upcoming Exynos 2400, shares the same disappointing attributes as its predecessor because, in the latest leak, it fails to beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s Adreno 740 GPU. The Xclipse 940 may serve as a stop-gap GPU, giving Samsung some breathing room in launching its custom chip. We cannot tell for sure, but we will wait for future updates and provide information accordingly.
