It was previously presumed that Apple used the iPhone 14 Pro's logic board on the standard iPhone 15 models. However, it appears that the company redesigned the logic board for the standard models as well as the 'Pro' models and used Qualcomm's X70 modem. Last year, the entire iPhone 14 lineup featured Qualcomm's X65 modem. What this means is that the company's modem upgrade is part of its trend for the entire lineup.
The news was shared by iFixit's Shahram Mokhtari on X, suggesting that the iPhone 15 series features Qualcomm's X70 modem. Qualcomm's X70 modem features various improvements over last year's X65 mode. According to speed tests conducted by SpeedSmart, the X70 delivers faster 5G performance. On the iPhone 15, the modem delivers up to 24 percent faster 5G performance than last year's models.
Apple is currently in the process of developing its in-house modems for the iPhone to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm. Apple appears to be shifting from its outsourcing approach and developing technology that only it can use. The trend began with the launch of Apple Silicon. Gradually, the company gradually shifted away from Intel-based chips in its Mac lineup and adopted its custom-designed SoC. Currently, almost the entire Mac lineup has shifted from Intel-based chips to the M-series processors.

Other than this, the company is also working on its custom microLED displays. As of right now, Apple is dependent on Samsung for supplying LTPO OLED panels. It was previously reported that the company will begin using microLED screens with the launch of a new Apple Watch Ultra model in 2025. The display technology will gradually move to the iPhone, iPad, and even the Mac.
Qualcomm's X70 modem in the iPhone 15 Pro is also more power efficient compared to the X65 from last year. Conjoined with the A17 Pro chip, the X70 modem will make room for better battery life.
