Xiaomi is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, and for a decade, we have been seeing the company ship its Android smartphones loaded with the MIUI skin. It appears that the company is now looking to replace that with something that is more in line with the company's recent branding choices. It appears that MIUI could be replaced by MiOS.
Just like Samsung before it, Xiaomi could also change the name of its OS to better fit the brand's identity
Now, the word "Mi" is also associated with Xiaomi. I mean, it is not only a part of MIUI, but it also used to be the name for smartphones until the company retired the name and went with a more streamlined numbering scheme. However, replacing MIUI with MiOS seems like a bold move. What we don't know is whether this will just be a change in name or a change in teh complete OS; if it is the latter, then future Xiaomi phones might not run on Android.
Honestly, I never had any issues with MIUI as a name, and I still don't think I'll have any issues with MiOS. I'm just hoping that Xiaomi still decides to keep using Android under the hood because the market does need good Android smartphones aside from what Samsung and other brands have to offer.
Currently, MIUI 14 is the latest version, and if it is true that we are heading toward the end of it, then there is a possibility that by the end of this year or early next year, we will see MiOS officially being announced and whenever that happens or whenever we get more evidence of this new OS existing, we will be sure to keep you posted.
Changing the name of an OS is not something that happens a lot in the smartphone industry. We have seen it happen before. Samsung used to have TouchWiz, which then turned into One UI, and today, it is a vital part of the brand's identity. Xiaomi doing this with the MIUI is not really something that comes as a surprise.
