Strong demand for the Mate 60 lineup in China means that Huawei now has sufficient encouragement to launch the P70 next year. According to a new rumor, the supply chain of the company’s 2024 flagship has been revealed, mentioning the manufacturers’ names that will mass produce its under-screen optical fingerprint scanner module. Interestingly, the rumor does not talk about which chipset it would use as the Kirin 9000S’ successor.

The plan to start rounding up supply chain partners for the P70 has already commenced from Huawei’s side, according to a rumor published by MyDrivers that was spotted by Huawei Central. The 2024 flagship is said to feature an optical under-screen fingerprint scanner, and it is to be supplied by three manufacturers; Goodix, GigaDevice, and Weir. Now, why does one rumor claim that Huawei needs to source an optical under-screen scanner from three manufacturers?
Apparently, it is because the price of the optical fingerprint scanner has increased by 15-20 percent, while others have witnessed a 30 percent hike. Bringing more suppliers to the fold will mean that the price of the P70’s components can be reduced, but that still does not explain which chipset will power its innards. With the Kirin 9000S found in the Mate 60 series, will Huawei proceed to use a more advanced SoC in the P70, or will it have little choice but to re-use the Kirin 9000S?
A recent report states that the Kirin 9000S is not a true 7nm silicon and that SMIC, the Chinese semiconductor firm that mass produced the SoC, has fabricated the chip on its 14nm process while making improvements so that it performs on par with a 7nm-class part. Assuming that this is true, then SMIC can employ the same techniques to make a slightly better chipset than the Kirin 9000S.
Unfortunately, without access to EUV machinery, it will be stuck with producing silicon on an older node. We believe that Huawei will eventually need to start competing with rivals in this area, and once we get to know more information about the P70, we will update our readers.
