Apple's transition to its custom M-series chips from Intel-based processors has proved to be quite a success for the company. The company is expected to release its third wave of upgrades for the chips next year, adopting TSMC's 3nm architecture for better CPU and GPU performance. However, Qualcomm is now working to directly compete against Apple with its new Snapdragon X series of chips which will offer enhanced computational and graphical performance.
Qualcomm to launch Snapdragon X chips for PCs next year which will have an "infection point for the PC industry"
Apple has almost completely transitioned to its custom Silicon and the latest product to adopt the M-series treatment is the new Mac Pro that Apple announced at its WWDC event earlier this year. Qualcomm has announced that its next-gen X series of chips will be designed for PCs and the first iteration will be seen next year. Qualcomm says that the new X series chips will be an "infection point for the PC industry all thanks to enhanced performance capabilities.
If Snapdragon's latest endeavor succeeds in making a mark as good as the Apple Silicon, it could pose serious competition to Intel as well as AMD. However, since we are only speculating on the performance at this point, it would be wise to reserve our judgments until the results are evident in tests. The Snapdragon X series will be built on the Qualcomm Oryon CPU based on technology brought forward by Nuvia. Nuvia was acquired by Qualcomm which builds in-house Arm-based chips. The chips are expected to deliver performance similar to Apple's M-series of chips.
The Snapdragon X chips will also feature better efficiency which will potentially bring a major boost to the battery life on Windows-powered laptops. Furthermore, some of the appealing elements of the chip include on-device AI processing for faster processing as well as 5G capabilities. The chips will be launched next year but according to The Verge, Arm has sued Qualcomm as well as Nuvia for licenses that are not valid at the moment, Potentially, the companies will reach a conclusion by the time Snapdragon X chips are ready for launch next year.
Apple is well ahead of the competition when it comes to its custom Silicon. It smashes the Geekbench scores as it competes against the giants of the industry. The company is preparing to launch its M3 series of chips which will be based on TSMC's 3nm process, allowing the chips to deliver improved performance over the M2 chips. We will keep you guys updated on the latest, so be sure to stick around.
