The success of the AirTag probably means that an AirTag 2 launch is not happening in the near future, with an analyst predicting that the second-generation tracker is not expected to arrive before 2025. Earlier, it was mentioned that Apple would unveil the successor in the fourth quarter of 2024, but according to the latest update, those plans have changed.
AirTag 2 was previously reported to be involved in Apple’s spatial computing ecosystem, which included the $3,499 Vision Pro headset
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has not provided a reason for the delay of the AirTag 2, but does state that mass production is not happening before 2025. Kuo stated back in 2022 that even though the original AirTag has not been given much attention in terms of a successor, it continues to rise in popularity, with shipments estimated to have reached 20 million and 35 million in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
A prediction was made that if these trackers continued to sell well, an AirTag 2 would launch in the future, but that has yet to happen. Could this indicate that the original model is not selling as well as it should? That is a possibility, or perhaps, seeing as how convenient the existing trackers already are, there is little need to introduce the AirTag 2, as millions are invested in designing the device, not to mention developing the software for it.

However, assuming that the AirTag 2 does launch in 2025, we should see improved location tracking from it and best of all, it could be integrated with the Apple Vision Pro too, but for what exact purpose? We are unsure of that. The ultra-wideband chip present in the AirTag allowed for precision tracking, and with the iPhone 15 models getting a second-generation chip, the AirTag 2 may allow for even more accurate tracking indoors.
Unfortunately, the lack of details present in Kuo’s post means we only have our own speculations to rely on, and that will not mean much in the grand scheme of things. Given how helpful the current model is for users, we doubt that Apple is even thinking of prioritizing an AirTag 2 launch at this time.
