Currently, the iPad Pro is Apple’s largest tablet available to purchase, offering a 12.9-inch display that also supports mini-LED technology, sweetening the combo. However, one report states that the company intends to release a super-sized version of the iPad Air, sporting the same screen size as the premium tablet.
Assuming a launch actually happens, the iPad Air will continue to miss out on flagship features to bring down its price
At this time, the iPad Air 5 features a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD panel with a 2360 x 1640 resolution, and according to a DigiTimes report that cites unnamed industry sources that was also caught by MacRumors, the new iPad Air will share the same 12.9-inch display size as the iPad Pro, but there will be some differences. Apart from the obvious pricing separating the two models, the other difference will be the lack of mini-LED technology since that is a costly addition to the total.
If such a model launches, it will make the entire lineup more convoluted than it already is, with the biggest confusion being caused by the 12.9-inch iPad Air and iPad Pro. Consumers not accustomed to Apple’s tablet family may pick the incorrect model in this regard. Then again, there continues to be a gaping price hole between the iPad Air 5 and the current-generation iPad Pro models.
The larger iPad Air could occupy a middle ground, and we have seen in the past that Apple has treated the current model with the M1, so it goes without saying that the bigger variant will also feature a Mac-grade custom silicon, which depending on its launch timeline, will comprise of the M2.
Unfortunately, DigiTimes does not have the best track record when it comes to Apple product launches, so there is a possibility that while the technology giant is testing prototypes of the tablet, it is not necessary that any one of these will go into mass production.
