Huawei and Mate 60 are stirring up trouble in China but for its competitors such as Apple and its iPhone 15. According to the latest estimates, around 1.6 million units were shipped running HarmonyOS, causing a dent in competitors’ businesses, and what is even more impressive is the fact that more units were sold during the time that the iPhone 15 officially launched in the region.

In just six weeks, the Mate 60 sold 1.6 million units, though the exact breakdown of which model was the most popular was not provided by Counterpoint Research. Reuters reports that Huawei managed to defy a slowing smartphone market, reaching 400,000 units in the same two-week period that the iPhone 15 launched in China. This region is of paramount importance to Apple as it ships the highest number of smartphones by volume, but with the resurgence of Huawei, things might become difficult in the near future.
A previous estimation stated that both the popularity of the Mate 60 and reduced consumer demand caused iPhone 15 sales to suffer in China, with shipments being down 4.5 percent in the first 17 days compared to the iPhone 14 launch from last year. While some may not believe that a 4.5 percent drop is a large figure, it equates to millions of units shipped in that period, and assuming Huawei has a sufficient supply of Kirin 9000S chipsets available, things might become even more cumbersome for companies like Apple heading into 2024.
TrendForce has already highlighted a few challenges for Apple in 2024 that will get in the way of selling more iPhones, with Huawei listed as one of them. Then again, without access to advanced EUV machinery, SMIC, the company responsible for mass producing the 7nm Kirin 9000S, might be limited when it comes to fabricating more powerful and efficient SoCs. Huawei has not commented on its recent success, but we will have to see how it fares in the coming months and next year as far as shipments in China go.
