In his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg states that Apple has been working on generative AI technology for years. Additionally, the company executives were taken aback by the entire industry introducing their rendition of the technology. Apple has not yet released or implemented the technology in its products. However, this is about to change next year as Apple is preparing to integrate generative AI technology in iOS 18 next year.
One of the significant features that generative AI could bring to iOS 18 is improved Siri. The virtual assistant is behind Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant when performing complex tasks and understanding contextual commands. While the company has lost a significant chunk of time, the features could be limited initially. It was previously reported that Apple would not debut generative AI features with the initial release of iOS 18, and instead, the company will roll out a software update later next year.
Apple's Eddy Cue, Craig Frederighi, and John Giannandrea are leading the generative AI efforts, supervising the development of a large language model that will be available with the launch of iOS 18. Giannandrea and his team are working on a "smarter version of Siri" boasting AI features. These AI features will be built from the ground up, where Siri can interact with various elements of iOS, such as the Messages app. The technology will allow the Messages app to make better predictions to complete sentences.
iOS 18's generative AI features will also be part of the new Apple Music app with auto-generated playlists. Furthermore, productivity apps like Apple's Pages and Keynotes could use generative AI for better writing assistance and generating ideas. Once the company releases its generative AI features, it will continue to grow overtime. However, the company must make giant leaps to catch up to the competition.
