It was previously rumored that Apple would host another event after announcing the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9. While official details are not out at this stage, the company is expected to unveil its brand-new 3nm chips later this year. The new M3 chips will be unveiled later this year, potentially in October or November, but the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will be available on higher-end Macs next year. Nonetheless, we now have details on the 3nm M3 Pro and M3 Max chips which will feature a higher CPU and GPU core count.
Apple's M3 Pro and M3 Max chips to launch with massive performance gains compared to the current M2 Pro and M2 Max chips
According to Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, the higher-end Macs will be upgraded sometime next year or the year after with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips. The analyst states that the base M3 Pro will feature a 12-core CPU and an 18-core GPU. The top-of-the-line variant will feature 14 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores for enhanced computational and graphical performance. In contrast, the M2 Pro maxed out at 12 CPU cores and 19 GPU cores.
As for the M3 Max chip, the base variant of the SoC will house 16 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores. For the higher-end version, the CPU core count remains the same but with 40 GPU cores. In contrast to the M2 Max chip, the M3 Max features massive improvements in both CPU and GPU departments. Gurman has also shared details on the M3 Ultra chip, highlighting hefty gains for forthcoming Macs.
As mentioned earlier, Gurman states that the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will make a debut in the first half of next year. However, if you are not planning to get your hands on the powerful machines, you should still wait for Apple to announce the M3-powered Macs later this year. We have curated the list of Macs that will be launching later this year in October or November. In terms of M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, the upgraded 3nm chip will only be available on the higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, Mac mini, and Mac Studio.
I don’t believe the M3 Pro and M3 Max Macs will arrive until 2024. And it’s plausible that an M3 Ultra chip doesn’t arrive until the end of that year at the earliest.
Take note that these are mere speculations at this stage, as the final word rests with Apple. The company could limit or cap the performance of the chips for future updates, but no further information is available on the subject. Apple will host its special event on September 12 to announce the iPhone 15 lineup with the 3nm A17 Bionic chip.
