Over the past couple of years, the one company that has remained consistent with its statement happens to be Fairphone. The company has managed to make a name for itself in the market for a number of reasons. Their phones are not just sustainable, but they are also ethically produced and modular. This means that the entirety of the phone can be self-repaired with just the basic tools and the knowledge of how to use them. Now, the Fairphone 5 is here, and there are a number of amazing things about this smartphone.
The Fairphone 5 is the smartphone for you if you don't want to upgrade to a new phone every year
For starters, with the Fairphone 5, the company is promising that the phone will receive five major Android updates and eight years of security patches, which kind of is a lot, even when you compare it to other companies. For instance, Samsung provides four major OS updates, and Google does three, for now, but is planning on changing it to five. There is more, however. The company has commented that the phone will get anywhere from eight to ten years of software support, which honestly is bonkers when you compare it with everything else in the market.
Now, in terms of the specs, the Fairphone 5 does pack some mainstream hardware, but the chipset that the company is using is the Qualcomm QCM6490, and the reason why you have not seen this chipset in any other phone in the market is that the processor is meant for industrial use. Based on the information available on this, it looks like a different variant of the Snapdragon 778G, which is an off-the-shelf processor normally found in upper-mid-range smartphones.
Fairphone 5 also brings a modular design, just like we have seen on older devices. This means that you can swap ten components of the phone without any issues. So, for instance, if the charging port on your phone has died, simply head over to the company's website or a distribution partner, buy the replacement part, and replace it.
The rest of the Fairphone 5 is decently specced as well, you are getting 8 gigs of RAM, 256 gigs of internal storage that can be upgraded with a microSD card slot, and you can go as high as 2TB. The phone features a 6.46-inch POLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 4,200 mAh removable battery with 30W charging speed. The company has mentioned how the battery will hold its capacity for 1,000 charging cycles. But thankfully, the removable nature of the battery will ensure that you can replace the battery long before it completely dies on you.
Optically, the Fairphone 5 is equipped with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX800 primary sensor with OIS and a 50-megapixel IMX858 ultra-wide sensor. There is a ToF sensor on the back, and you are looking at a 50-megapixel front camera, too.
The Fairphone 5 is running on Android 13 out of the box. But the company has mentioned how you can actually use an alternative operating system if you want. This should make the new phone easy to root and load with a custom OS like Linux or something else entirely.
Coming to the pricing and availability, the Fairphone 5 has a suggested retail price of €699 in Europe and £619 in the U.K. We are not sure if the phone is going to be available outside the EU and the U.K. markets, but if it does, we will keep you posted.
