According to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 4 will be the first device to come with Apple's in-house 5G modem. While these are mere speculations at this stage, the company is heavily investing to move away from modems designed by Qualcomm. Qualcomm has been supplying Apple with 5G models for the iPhone for a long time. Apple has already acquired a large portion of Intel's smartphone modem business and it will continue to test and build its in-house modems for the iPhone.
Apple will stick to Qualcomm for a few years before its custom modems are ready. It was previously rumored that Apple's 5G modem will be ready by 2025, which coincides with the iPhone SE 4 launch time frame. The iPhone SE 4 was slated to be delayed until 2025, which gives us a hint that the 5G modem will launch with it. However, the company could see fit to launch the new modems with the iPhone 17 lineup in 2025, depending on the supply chain.
Currently, Apple will make use of modems supplied by Qualcomm for the forthcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models. The trend would stretch to next year as well with the launch of the iPhone 16 lineup. While details on the capabilities of Apple's custom 5G modem are scarce, it will consume less power compared to the current modems. Along with other factors, this could contribute to better battery life on the iPhone.
As for the upcoming iPhone SE 4, the device will undergo a radical design change. It was previously reported that the SE 4 will come with a design similar to that of the iPhone 14 lineup. What this means is that the device would let go of the Touch ID authentication and adopt Face ID.
