It is possible for all iPhone 15 models to be connected to an external monitor through a single cable, but Apple’s newest lineup only supports video mirroring and cannot natively provide the same desktop experience, that is after one developer made a workaround using an iPhone 15 Pro. Though there is still room for improvement, we get a small demonstration of what is possible.
Connecting an iPhone 15 Pro to the Apple Studio Display causes noticeable lag, but optimizations are expected to be rolled out
A video posted by @iOS_App_Dev on X shows an iPhone 15 Pro connected to the Apple Studio Display using a single cable. A USB-C to USB-C or Thunderbolt cable was likely used to hook up the monitor to the iPhone because both these two Apple products only ship with USB-C ports. Remember that the Studio Display features a 5K resolution, and assuming the iPhone 15 Pro is driving all those pixels, it is an unbelievable feat.
Using the demo version of infiniteX2P Studio, the developer shows that it is possible to move out of video mirroring mode and switch to a desktop one. In the video, you can clearly see that a large Google Chrome browser is opened, along with a few icons placed in the bottom center, plus a drop-down menu showing various options. The developer also shows that multiple windows can be opened, delivering a macOS-like experience.
Unfortunately, things can never be this seamless, with the video showing that opening the browser is accompanied by tons of lag. The developer mentions that the rounded corners cause most of this lag and that the required effort is being put into improving the experience significantly. Apple does not officially provide a desktop mode for any iPhone 15 model, but infiniteX2P Studio could be the start of something exceptional.
Samsung has allowed its flagships to enter into desktop mode using a single cable, a feature that the company refers to as ‘DeX,’ but it has yet to catch on with users, likely due to the lack of optimizations done. Still, it will not be surprising to see our smartphones become entire desktops in a few years, that too using just a single cable and external monitor while also allowing ‘out of the box’ mouse and keyboard support. The hardware is certainly capable, now it is up to companies to take charge and develop the necessary software.
